of the information contained here is at least two or more years old. That's
the way we wanted it. Movie stars like their privacy and we respect Mr.
Jones' private life. In November 1996, we received a call from Cliff, a
friend of Mr. Jones. He was referred to us by Janette Blair. She had known
Cliff for many years through the Texas and Southwestern Cattlemen Association
convention. He was looking for a male Catahoula for Mr. Jones for his six-year-old
daughter for Christmas. We had a pup, but he would be too old at Christmas
time. A friend of ours, Greg Lewis, had recently bred his female to our
Show Champion, Job. Mr. Jones called Greg and the deal was made. Mr. Jones
and his veterinarian-of-choice in his home town of San Saba, Texas, had
arranged to drive to Van, Texas to inspect some registered Brangus Mr. Jones
was considering buying, and on the way, they scheduled a stop a the Burger
King in Van to meet the Lewis' to get his new pup. The veterinarian took
the picture of Mr. Jones, the pup and Greg, Kim, and daughter Autumn.
Dawn Laurel, Mr. Jones' wife, took care of the paperwork and conveyed to Greg and Kim that Mr. Jones had named the pup, Elm Creek's Johnny Mack Brown. He had pondered upon using Tom Mix also, but decided on JMB. Johnny Mack Brown was sent to Obedience School and later worked cattle with Mr. Jones. Over a year later, Mr. Jones called Greg. He wanted another male Catahoula. Greg didn't have one and he told Mr. Jones he knew who did. We did! Greg had seen a litter of pups we had out of Cutter and Kit Kat, and the best pup we had kept. Mr. Jones called and spoke with Amos about the purchase of the pup. The next morning while we were walking out the door to go to work, the phone rang. It was Ms. Laurel. Mr. Jones was entertaining polo players from South America, and he asked her to come get the pup! For her convenience, we arranged to meet her at the mall in Terrell, Texas. So at noon that Monday, we were talking with the prettiest woman in Texas! Dawn Jones, what a true beauty! She called us the next day regarding paperwork and gave us an update. Mr. Jones had named his new male, Two Diamond's Gene Autry. Gene Autry was lying on a goat-skinned rug in front of the fireplace with Johnny Mack Brown. They were doing well together and getting to know each other. In September 1998, Greg called to tell us that Mr. Jones was on the front cover of POLO Magazine with Gene Autry. Amos wrote a letter to the editor regarding the article and soon POLO Magazine was calling us for photos. Thankfully, Ms. Laurel is a photographer and provided the pictures needed! In November, we heard that Gene Autry was missing, Mr. Jones had made four movies in a row and his Catahoulas were in San Antonio during that time. When filming was completed, he took Gene Autry and Johnny Mack Brown back to the ranch. Gene Autry was more of a 'rambler' than his co-hart, and apparently he got lost. They looked for him for several weeks. They put flyers all over town and contacted veterinarians around the area but never heard a word from anyone. Mr. Jones also has a female Catahoula named Laurie Darling and another male, "Hoot Gibson"! Mr. Jones and his wife Dawn, travel with their Catahoulas, and even took Hoot Gibson as a pup in a mesh bag on a trip to Canada! Yes, Canada, said it was okay!! |
