Cayenne
Sue
We read an ad in a nearby town paper advertising Catahoula pups. When we called the lady, of course, the "Cadillac pup" - a double-glass eyed, blazed-faced leopard male was already sold. The lady was very discouraged, but was delighted about a red leopard female pup in the mostly black litter. "Sue" was an Australian Heeler breeder and this was her first Catahoula litter. She had only owned the dam for a short time; a gift from someone who didn't want her any more. It was just about Christmas when Amos drove off to see the pups. I was very surprised and happy when he came home with "Cayenne Sue" whom he purchased, and a bonus -- her dam, Stardust's Katy who was sired by a famous Catahoula, Swiftwater's Beowolf, owned and trained by Roxie Cantu. Although Katy, a black with brindle-trim gyp, was less than two years old, she had quite a history behind her. She had worked cattle on the Phillips Ranch in Frisco, Texas where the famous racehorse, Dash For Cash, was from. The ranch manager said she wasn't rough enough on cattle, so he sold her. When she came to our house, she was welcomed with lots of love and TLC. She was a very active Catahoula, and soon showed our other Catahoulas 'the ropes'. She showed them 'how to climb' out of their kennels!! Catahoulas are always ready and willing to learn something new so this was a real treat for them. Now they knew how to get out of their kennels! So, for two or three weeks, it was hectic here at Two Diamond Catahoulas! Katy's sire, Swiftwater's Beowulf is one of the most famous of all Catahoulas. He has sired multi-champions and even though he is gone, his stamina, working ability, and show conformation continues in his offspring. He weighed 75 pounds and was a blue leopard with cracked eyes! He was, and always will be, the most wonderful of all Catahoulas to his owner, Roxie Cantu Mills, and to many others! Cayenne was quite a prize. She wasn't as lively as her mother, but she was curious, active, and a very sweet puppy. As with most of our puppies, she was allowed to roam the place at will, to learn naturally the life of a dog! She was about 10 months old when we brought 3-month-old Cutter home. They were playmates from the beginning. When they were a year old, Amos paired them up in their first Two-Dog Event. They placed 4th amongst trained, seasoned Catahoulas! That was just the beginning. Everywhere they went, they made a showing. Cayenne has even won a first place in Show Conformation! When we bred Cayenne to Cutter, we sold the pups to people who were close friends so we could keep up with the pups' progress. Cayenne is 9 years old now and they have only had three litters. When we were in Winnfield this past March, five different people asked us for a Cutter/Cayenne pup! Here are some photos of Cutter and Cayenne, Katy, Dodger, Beowulf and some of the Cutter/Cayenne pups! |
